Final Course Reflection

Taking English 11000 this semester was fun. My main expectation for this class was that it would be a course that allows me to be creative and not as restricting when it comes to what I can or can not write. I’ve had classes in the past that never really let me express myself and always restricted my writing and this class completely changes that. My expectation was fulfilled as it allowed me to write about any topic and any experience I wanted. I view audience and purpose when writing as something that is essential to making a good read. Before taking this class, I knew the importance of purpose, as purpose is something that intrigues the audience into reading your work but with the audience, this class went into depth about the types of questions to consider when choosing an audience. This class taught me how to choose an approach (logos, ethos, or pathos) to appeal to my audience. A logos approach connects with the audience through logical arguments, an ethos approach connects with the audience through the author’s credibility, and finally a pathos approach connects with the audience’s emotions. Choosing different tone words conveys different feelings to a variety of audiences. With that being said, my perceptions changed on how tone influences speech. Before, I believed that tone was only shown through the words you use such as adjectives but after this class I also realized that phrases, points of views, and dialogue affect the connotation of a writing. This course has changed the way I write because it has helped me expand on ideas and allowed me to communicate to others about my work and what influenced me to write about the topics I chose. It has allowed me to recognize and accept peer feedback and incorporate it into my work to make it better.
