In this narrative, I wrote about my journey to realizing that music is my passion. In this story, I dive into my starting experience with music, which is musical theater, and my feelings throughout the whole process. The concept that has impacted my learning and my writing purposes is context. This is because this whole narrative is the context behind why I am doing what I am doing today, which is majoring in music. I dived deeper into the musical which changed my feelings about performing and music. The biggest struggle with writing this was expressing my feelings simply because I’m just not used to it, especially in writing. Because I had to write about feelings, I had to be in a way, more in tune and aware of all my thoughts, feelings, and reactions at that time that I never really acknowledged. Some insight I have gained from this experience is how to have a voice in my writing accept criticism and incorporate it into my writing. Criticism is important not only to me but to writing as a whole. It allows me to take feedback and implement it into whatever I am doing to make it better. It teaches me how to be a better writer. This process, specifically peer reviewing, allowed me to achieve one of the Course Learning Outcomes “Students will develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing.” Editing was a challenge as well because I had to reread my work a couple of times and add or take away things to make it better, but the result made me proud. I realized that writing this essay opened my eyes to how to tell a story with purpose and conflict so your audience can take away and learn something from the story. The audience for my story is children and maybe even young adults who are struggling to find what they want to do or maybe feel lost. I tailored my language by taking a more pathos approach by including moments of anxiety and personal thoughts. The first-person perspective also really helps to connect to the reader, almost in the way of an actual conversation. I wrote this story to hopefully reach those who might be interested in music or even those who may feel like experimenting with different extracurricular activities during school or with different career choices. I would let them know that “hey, maybe trying something can be fun!” Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy the journey.
